New to the 2018 edition of NFPA 99 is a requirement for the inspection of installed medical gas piping before it is concealed. This is similar to a rough plumbing inspection and will require an ASSE 6020 Inspector or ASSE 6030 Verifier certification. In the past, medical gas installers were only required to have their work verified at the completion of a project. Installers will now be required to have their labeling/tagging and initial pressure tests witnessed before enclosing or concealing any installed piping in walls, ceilings, underground, etc. As with most added or modified medical gas requirements, it is difficult to know when or how this will be implemented in different states. But one thing is certain: there will be a growing demand for ASSE 6020 Inspectors in the near future.
